The author did not have a specific idea in mind but wanted it to speak to the genre of his book--medical thriller. ENIGMA BLACK is a science fiction/dystopian/superhero novel. Sara Furlong Burr didn't want her cover to be too busy, but more of an accurate reflection of the inner turmoil faced by each of the characters with a hint of mystery attached to it. She also wanted the colors (red and black) as depicted in a painting in one of the later chapters to be represented as the good vs evil struggle which is prevalent throughout the book and the series as a whole.
